Mo’s JoNoWriMo Check-in

My trifecta of goals:

1) Complete requested revisions of YA novel and re-submit to agent.
DONE. After writing additional scenes and deleting ones that weren’t working hard enough, I was surprised to find that the manuscript ended up with almost exactly the same word-count. It was one page shorter!

2) Re-read and revise where necessary the YA novel I finished two years ago.
I started working on this, but haven’t gotten beyond the first three chapters.

3) Rewrite middle-grade mermaid novel, since I wrote it five years ago, and I like to think my writing has improved since then.
I spent my time at the beach this weekend writing (sh**** first drafts of) two brand new chapters, then polished and re-wrote until I found them less offensively bad. (The setting certainly demanded that I work on the mermaid story instead of the YA.) It was difficult to get back inside this MC’s voice. I’ve spent the past couple of years working in edgy teen voices, complete with profanities. The mermaid story is more lush and descriptive, and I won’t use swear words in an MG. I must listen carefully to this MC’s softer voice.

(Shells never look as vivid once they’re dry as they do when they’re glimmering on the wet gray sand, do they? I put them in a bowl of water so you can see their colors better. Sorry about the glare from the lamp.) (I’m such a beach geek.)

Besides writing, this is what I did this weekend:

Stared out at the sea.

Walked on the beach.

Slept with the window open so I could hear the sound of the ocean all night.

Had wild, uninterrupted thoughts.

Ordered “Little Miss Sunshine” from the hotel’s movie menu – loved it! I’m going to rent it again so I can watch it with DH –he’ll love it, too. We like movies that are weird-in-a-good-way.

Listened to davidlubar’s Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie during my drive down and back. I’m on the last disk right now, but didn’t quite finish before I got home. It’s great! If you haven’t read it, you must. This is not just an idle recommendation, it’s the law.

My two guys managed fine in my absence. In fact, they found my presence so scintillating upon my return that they were both in bed by 8:30 last night.

I hope everyone had productive writing weekends.
