Friday Five

1) THE MERMAID’S MIRROR comes out in less than a month! Hence, over the next few weeks, I will be posting links to interviews with some kindly blogger friends. You might want to check them out, not just for the flood of mermaid discussions (yep … water wordplay … I haz it), but because there will be lots of giveaways, too. (I've had way too much fun shopping for mermaid and surfer tchotchkes.)

Ever wondered when my fascination with mermaids began? Jackie Dolamore asked that question here, and I answered. (Hint: a View-Master was involved.)

Jackie and I bonded on LiveJournal years ago – now we share an agent. Not only that, we both have mermaid books coming out! The world … she is petite. Jackie’s book, BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY, comes out in the spring of 2011. It’s a love story between a mermaid and a winged man. Can’t wait!

Want to read PARANORMALCY, by Kiersten White, or the hotly anticipated MATCHED, by Ally Condie, or even my book? Check out Jackie's interview for details on how you might win these ARCs.

2) Speaking of book releases!

On Saturday, October 2 at 2 p.m., April Henry, Lauren Kate, and I will be appearing together at Powell’s Books in Beaverton. I haven’t read Lauren’s TORMENT yet, but I’ve read April’s GIRL, STOLEN … and it is a fantastic thriller!!

3) Don’t be afraid to click on this link, even though it has the word “virus” in it:
http://www.viruscomix.com/page523.html. It’s a poster (I’m going to order it) of the creative process. SO EXCELLENT.

4) I’m really sick of everything on my iPod. Do you guys have some recommendations? I need new music.

5) Happy weekend!

Are you kidding? Email or tweet me with what you like and I can come up with some new music for you!

Sep. 12th, 2010 03:20 pm (UTC)
Where to begin, Jonny Angel?!

Okay ... the last song I bought was the Eminem/Rihanna duet (which is catchy but makes me feel slightly ill). So I'm feeling behind the times w/ new music. Before that, I think the last album I bought was by One EskimO.

I'm an old skool U2 fangrrl. I can listen to most genres except country ... and even then, I do like some stuff. I have some Johnny Cash, some Hank Williams Sr. and, er, I even have a Dierks Bentley song. How could anyone not like "What Was I Thinkin'?"

I'm not a big fan of pop, more alternative. Let's see ... I love the Old 97's ... Lucinda Williams ... Ryan Adams ... Red Hot Chili Peppers ... Muse ... Los Lonely Boys ... I don't love over-produced stuff, but that's probably just my age. LOL.
Sep. 13th, 2010 03:59 pm (UTC)
hmmm, you're kind of all over the map here... :P

Early U2...have you listened to Arcade Fire or Deathcab for Cutie? That's kind of a similar sound.

For classic folk/country sounds you might want to check out Deer Tick, Phosphorescent, or Iron & Wine.

Lucinda Williams kind of has an earthier sound, right (not really sure)? Maybe Ani Difranco or something a little more rocking like Metric or Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

RHCP is throwing me off because all I think of is their early punk stuff, not their later croony radio-safe stuff. Which do you like?
Sep. 14th, 2010 01:44 pm (UTC)
*gasp* You don't know Lucinda Williams? "Drunken Angel"? "Those Three Days"? "Are You Alright?" *points at songs and nods vigorously*

I like ALL of the Chili Peppers ... but their really early stuff less so.

Oh! I do have already have a Florence et al song ... "Heavy in Your Arms." It's from the (blushes) "Eclipse" soundtrack. WHAT. I like the songs they choose for the movies.

Oh, I do like Iron and Wine - their song "Dead Man's Will" absolutely kills me.

Thanks for the recs!

Do you like Fleet Foxes?

Oy vey, I need to read my ARC of Mermaid's Mirror! I have ARC guilt!
Sep. 12th, 2010 03:24 pm (UTC)
Never heard of the Fleet Foxes ... will check them out!
Sep. 10th, 2010 04:04 pm (UTC)
Less than a month? Already?!? I can't wait!!!
Sep. 10th, 2010 04:05 pm (UTC)
I love that comic! But, seriously, there's an express lane? And it's clearly marked? How come I've never seen it? :-)

I hope to see you at Powell's! Still trying to figure out why I am *certain* I have something else going on that day and yet nothing is on my calendar....
Sep. 10th, 2010 04:51 pm (UTC)
That's a lovely interview :)

I'd give you music selections, but I only listen to classical (for the most part) -- um, ABBA? ;)
Sep. 10th, 2010 09:01 pm (UTC)
"Cosmic Love" by Florence and the Machine. But if you don't like it, you'll just think I'm weird...
Sep. 12th, 2010 03:24 pm (UTC)
I've heard of them - will check them out!!
Sep. 13th, 2010 04:00 pm (UTC)
Yes. Florence and the Machine. The entire album is brilliant.
Sep. 11th, 2010 12:05 am (UTC)
I'm loving Arcade Fire. Me and everyone else.
Sep. 12th, 2010 03:25 pm (UTC)
I have one of their older albums. Thanks!
Sep. 11th, 2010 01:38 am (UTC)
Yay mermaid books! =D
Sep. 11th, 2010 03:46 pm (UTC)
My daughter introduced me to Mumford & Sons - we like them very much. I am also a huge fan of The Mountain Goats - the main dude John Darnielle is a brilliant song writer. Anything by them is brilliant but All Hail West Texas and Tallahassee.

Aeroplane over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel is an old album - the band no longer exists but it is also brilliant - the whole thing.
Sep. 12th, 2010 03:25 pm (UTC)
Thanks, I will check these out!!
Sep. 13th, 2010 04:03 pm (UTC)
Mountain Goats is great smart, angry, folk, especially their earlier albums like Sunset Tree.

IMnsHO,Neutral Milk Hotel is one of the greatest alt/indie bands of the mid to late 90's. But definitely not for everyone. Might be a bit too "strange" for your tastes.
Sep. 12th, 2010 10:16 pm (UTC)
I'm so thrilled for your new book news.

I love that poster! Especially "Has it been done before" with the arrow to the internet. Now I'm thinking of creative friends who I can order this for too.
