Authorial Intrusion - Dia Reeves

I’m delighted to introduce Dia Reeves today on Authorial Intrusion for the first official interview of 2010!

Dia's debut novel BLEEDING VIOLET comes out today - congrats, Dia! I read an excerpt on her website, and I can't wait to get my hands on this book. It sounds dark and crazy and utterly original.

In an interview with blogger Sara at The Hiding Spot, Dia admitted that "Stephen King is easily the biggest influence and the reason I write creepy stuff instead of happy novels about girls getting afterschool jobs to pay for prom and whose biggest worry is that their football hero crushes won’t like them or that their parents are heading down the road to…DIVORCE. *gasp* I’ll take blood and guts over that stuff any day.” (She had me at Stephen King.)

Here's the official synopsis:
A mentally ill sixteen-year-old girl reunites with her estranged mother in an East Texas town that is haunted with doorways to other dimensions and protected by demon hunters called Mortmaine.

Dia Reeves is a librarian and lives in a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Her family, however, grew up in East Texas and has inspired her with many tales from the area. Bleeding Violet is her first novel.

Thai food or Chinese?
Um...cheeseburger?

Advice for writers in 5 words or less.
Don't ask--just write it. It's really sad hearing aspiring writers ask questions like, "Is it okay if I write about this?" or "Am I allowed to write about that?" You don't need anybody's permission, folks; just do it.

What are you reading right now?
Fire by Kristin Cashore is next up on my list. I meant to skip it and wait for Cashore's next one, but I keep hearing such great things about it.

What’s the last song you listened to?
Tranqualize by The Killers. Lou Reed sings on it, so I felt like a real hipster.

Do you speak a foreign language?
I speak just enough Spanish to get into trouble.

Which celebrity shares your birthday?
Jimi Hendrix!

Last book you gave as a gift.
I bought a bunch of Donald Goines books for my brother for Christmas. Real hardcore streetlit kinda stuff.

Rain or sun?
Rain! The sun and I are pretty much mortal enemies. Which is kinda awkward since I live in Texas.

Where would you like to travel that you haven’t yet?
Scandinavia!

If someone made you sing karaoke – you couldn’t refuse! – what would you sing?
"Just a Friend" by Biz Markie. That whole song is sung offkey, so if *I'm* offkey (and I would be), everyone would just think I was being true to the song.

Thanks for indulging our curiosity, Dia!
