Authorial Intrusion - Writing Advice in 5 Words or Less - 2009

It was my pleasure to host the Debs on Authorial Intrusion this year. I’ve collected their bits of pithy wisdom in one post for your convenience, and I can assure you that overall … they really do not want you to give up!

If you just can't get enough succinct counsel, you can go here for encouragement from 2008 and here for advice from 2007.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, everyone!

Kate Messner:
Sit back down. Try again.

Jon Skovron:
No surrender, no defeat.

Saundra Mitchell:
Shut up and write.

Carrie Ryan:
Remember your love of writing.

Cyn Balog:
Just keep swimming.

Sarah Ockler:
Don't give up, silly!

Megan Frazer:
Leave your comfort zone.

Cynthea Liu:
Try, try again. Repeat.

Sarah MacLean:
It's hard. Don't give up.

Pam Bachorz:
Commit to it.

Lauren Bjorkman:
To thine ownself be true.

Kristina Springer:
Don't give up.

Megan Crewe:
Stay true to your vision.

Jennifer Brown:
Risk-taking almost always pays off.

Jackson Pearce:
Write! Write! Write! Write! Breathe!

Sarah Cross:
Be awesome. Never give up!

Sydney Salter:
Read a lot of books!

Neesha Meminger:
Keep on, baby, don't stop.

Jennifer Jabaley:
Just commit to the story.

Erin Dionne:
Don't be afraid of revision!

Danielle Joseph:
You can do it!

Mandy Hubbard:
Never, ever, ever give up.

Aprilynne Pike:
While subbing, write another book.

C. Lee McKenzie:
Don't ever give up.

Deva Fagan:
Read broadly, stay determined, write.

Cindy Pon:
read, write, critique, revise, repeat.

Cheryl Renee Herbsman:
Kill the critic.

Heather Duffy Stone:
Stop thinking about what “sells.”

Leigh Brescia:
Keep writing. Don’t give up.

Jenny Moss:
Write, if you love it.

J.E. MacLeod:
Just Do It. And, Revise.

Stacey Jay:
Read, practice, read, practice, repeat.

If you’ve read this far, you deserve a treat! Jackson Pearce, Fearless Leader of the Debs, has created a video love song to writing … and she enlisted a lot of YA authors to help out, including me. Enjoy!
