I went to see “Wicked” today with lisa_schroeder!

Now I can’t get that song, “Popular,” out of my head. I’m due for some new iTunes, so I will download it.

Call for recommendations:

I need to freshen up my iPod. Please comment with the title of a song (or songs) you think I should try. I like all genres, although not as much country.

Anyway, back to "Wicked."

Before the show started, I noticed a little boy in the seat directly behind me … about four years old, maybe five. He was dressed up adorably for his first Broadway show, although I couldn’t help thinking, “Really? This mom thinks her pre-schooler is going to enjoy a three-hour musical, at $75 a pop?”

The only musical I ever took my pre-schooler to was “Blue’s Clues.”

So the lights went down, and … you guessed it: the very first scene has flying monkeys in it.

After a minute, I heard a low moan coming from behind me. As the monkeys gamboled, the moaning grew louder, and turned into crying.

I’m not sure how his mom managed to calm him down, but he subsided into (horrified?) silence. They stayed for the entire first half, and through intermission, but as it got closer to the next curtain, he got more distressed, and they left.

Great show, though, and it's always fun to see Lisa.

I get to see aprilhenry Tuesday night when she does a book-signing at Powell's. :-)

Re: Toonz!
Ahh, Saundra. You could be a professional playlist-maker. "All Over You" made it to my book, with commentary by Blake:

The singer's guts are "strewn out from coast to coast." Jeez, Spill Canvas Guy, have some dignity.

Yes, those are APPROPRIATE shows for a little one ... plus, she's pre-disposed to love theatre, I'm sure!

Plus: I saw lots of little girls there, and somehow I knew they'd be okay.

Urgh - taking really young kids to Broadway shows. What are parents thinking?

One of my favorite bands is October Project - they broke up several years ago, just before they got big, and I like to spread the word about them. "Sunday Morning, Yellow Sky" is one of my favorite songs by them. Also, "Something More Than This" and "Bury My Lovely." Those will give a good intro to their sound and style. I wouldn't be offended if you didn't check them out, but if you do, tell me what you think!

Oh! And the Pierces! Love them. "Three Wishes" is great. Also "Sticks and Stones." Here's the video. Nice and disturbing.

And while we're talking disturbing, here's the vid for "Bury My Lovely."

A few songs I love, from my shuffle:

My friend Sofia's super awesome latest song, Nickel and Dime http://www.myspace.com/sofiasings

Joey Ramone sings "Wonderful World" (love this!!)

Neko Case, Hold on Hold on

Muse, Stockholm Syndrome

Kings of Convenience, Homesick

Ben Folds, Learn to Live With What You Are (sweet song, complete with this unbelievably dorky video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7oMyQyBtqk )

... okay, never mind, that was a lot of songs. And I concur with SBW that October Project is good stuff.

I cannot tell you what to buy, although "Oxford Comma" by Vampire Weekend is good.

I myself will be purchasing Propane Nightmares by Pendulum next, having bought the entire Vampire Weekend CD a few weeks back.
