Playah is played

I’m expecting my editorial letter at the end of May, and I’m already thinking about revisions. I finished FLASH BURNOUT in December 2005. Knowing how quickly slang goes stale, I avoided it as much as possible, but it’s a challenge to write a first-person YA without lapsing into some common usages.

I knew I could always edit later.

Here we are in the spring of 2008, and that day has come for ‘playah.’

Blake’s older brother, Garrett, uses it sarcastically to torment Blake. Here is the section where it’s used for the first time, in Chapter One:

“Haul ass, Playah,” says Garrett. “We’re outtie in five.”
Garrett started calling me ‘Playah’ after I acquired an official GirlFriend. I guess it’s better than Ass-wipe, my previous nickname.

So … yeah.

‘Playah’ is used up, and ‘outtie’ may follow it to the chopping block, too. Since the name of Blake’s brother was decided by poll, I thought I would turn you guys loose on my outdated slang.

Feel free to suggest alternatives in the comments. Please!

Okay, I'm off to bed with my stuffy head. See you - and your brilliant suggestions! - in the morning.

Poll #1187485 Fix the nickname!

I'm not sure what I'd use, but isn't it nice to know that asswipe is eternal?

Um...since I haven't taught teens in seven years, I'm totally out of things. But I'm sure you'll get it right :)

Out of the suggested nicknames, I think "pimp" would work. However, I'm partial to "playboy". It still has the feel of playa, but probably stands the test of time a little better.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

Yeah, I like the idea of playboy! Mostly because I love playah and hate to see you lose it! Playboy is close to it.

I like chicknip because I have never heard it before. Me and my friends always used to like to take under used words and make them more popular, or use them just because no one else did. So I like that one.

Re: random commenter
Thanks! I hate the word 'pimp,' so I'm really hoping for other input! Geekily, 'sex dwarf' is my favorite.

You know, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping "outtie." It does remind me of Clueless, but if this character is sort of silly in how he talks, it can still fit.

As far as "Playah," I feel that the main thing that makes it lose its timelessness is the phonetic spelling. "Player" might still work... But as far as the new options on the poll, I do feel that "Pimp" is the most timeless.

Hmmm. What about "Stud"? When I was in high school in '95, teens used that term without irony - we didn't even know what it really meant! Has that turned around now?

*slapping my own head*

Of course! You're brilliant!

My college roommate used to call my BF "Studly." (She hated him.) (I married him anyway.) :-D

Seems to me I hear my 15 year old using stud. With much sarcasm behind. I'm going to ask him when he gets in.

I gotta agree Pimp is not my fave.

Well, since l-cat brought it up, I'm not really a big fan of "outtie", either. I think "out" works just as well, and will stand up over time a little better.

Sex dwarf????? Please tell me you made that up. O.o

Hmm, I agree with Lisa S. that a two-syllable word sounds best here, but "stud" seems pretty timeless, so that might work. I think you could keep "player" if you used the normal spelling. For ex., R&B singer Lloyd ("Get it Shawty") has a song called "Player's Prayer" on his 2007 album.

"Sex god"?

Since I can't vote in the poll, I'd go with pimp. It's got a certain timeless quality to it. ;)

Okay if you want a High School opinion...

Son: We'd say "Playah" He said absolute no to any of the ones on the poll and he added we would NEVER say outtie...

FYI: This is same son who does Boys Blogging Books... He reads a lot of YA.

Just his two cents.

I hope the Book Blogging Boy likes STUD or STUDLY. I'm leaning in that direction ...

I agree with the others--outtie can be changed to out. It doesn't seem like a term an older brother would use. I love sex dwarf and chicknip. Having the brother make up a nickname--rather than using common slang--would be the best option. The line as it stands now is pretty slang heavy, so if it were me I'd go for something a little more subtle for the 'name' part. Or change either the outtie or 'haul ass'. Like "Move it, sex dwarf. We're out in five."

A couple other names that immediately came to mind:

"Haul ass, little man."

"Haul ass, Boy Wonder." I used this in a book that will never see the light of day. It was probably one of my favorite nicknames :)

Aww. I don't wanna take your Boy Wonder line. You may need it someday. I likey, though. One of my friends calls me Girl Wonder.

A teenager's opinion:
I voted for boy toy, but turns out I like chicknip better, haha. I personally hate the word pimp, too, and I like Tara's "Boy Wonder."

I'm going to go out on the dumbass limb and say I don't know what chicknip is. Then I'm going to admit that I looked it up on Wiki and they don't know either.

However, I DO know Sex Dwarf! Um, disturbing... LOL. I say you go with the bones you've got. Change to the more timeless "player" and "out."
