Authorial Intrusion - Cecil Castellucci

Welcome to Authorial Intrusion! To read any of the previous interviews, just click on the tag “authorial intrusion” on the left side of the page.

For those just tuning in, here’s the history behind these posts:

I love reading about the Publishing Journeys of my favorite writers.

I love the long, soul-searching interviews that reveal every obstacle and triumph: the author whose agent made her do three revisions before signing her … the author who gets up at 4:30 a.m. to write, because it’s the only time she has to herself … the critically acclaimed author who spent nine years trying to get published … I never tire of this stuff!

Long, luxurious interviews aside, don’t you sometimes find yourself wondering: “But do you like Thai or Chinese food better?”

Reader, I asked them.

I assembled a grab-bag full of random questions and emailed them to some of my favorite writers.

They answered!

And now, without further ado, please welcome Cecil Castellucci!

Not only is Cecil Castellucci - castellucci - the uber-cool author of a slew of YA novels and graphic novels, she is the reason for the invention of the uber-cool book club “Not Your Mother’s Book Club” at Books Inc. in San Francisco notyourmothers. Jennifer Laughran was such a fangrrl that she created the book club with Cecil in mind. Since its inception, NYMBC has hosted a dazzling array of luminaries in the world of teen books, so it’s lucky for YA readers that Miss Cecil decided to become a writer. She does so much more than write, though! She is a director, filmmaker, musician, and self-professed nerdy girl. Please check out her blog at http://www.misscecil.com/index.html for all her eclectic goodness.

I think my favorite book of Cecil’s is The Queen of Cool (Candlewick 2006). No … Boy Proof (Candlewick 2005). No, wait! It's Beige ( Candlewick 2007). Yes, okay, gun to my head: Beige. I confess to not having read her Janes series yet, but you can bet I will. They are: Janes in Love (Minx/ DC Comics 2008) and The PLAIN Janes (Minx / DC Comics 2007).

Early bird or night owl?
I used to be more night owl, but now I am more early bird. I can switch it up, depending on the need. I'm not afraid to wake up early or go to bed late.

Rain or sun?

Advice for writers in 5 words or less.
Don't be precious.

Do you have a favorite among your book babies?
Boy Proof, because it's my first.

Odd Duck, because it's what I'm working on now.

First job?
Girl Friday to a Nobel Prize winning scientist.

Favorite pie?
I don't like Pie.

Tropical paradise or winter wonderland?
How can one choose? Tropical paradise, is, uh, A PARADISE! But a winter wonderland, when it's quiet and snowing and not the bitter aftermath and you are in a warm house with a fire and a hot cocoa, that is a WONDERLAND!

In writing, are you a plotter or a plunger?
I am a plunger. My editors are now forcing me to be a plotter.

What are you reading right now?
I am reading The New York Four by Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly.

Thai food or Chinese?

Any phobias?

Where would you like to travel that you haven't yet?
North Africa.

Beach or mountains?

Best present anyone ever gave you?
A super 8 camera.

Thanks for indulging our curiosity, Cecil!
