With Great Sadness

Dear friends and fans of Lisa –

This is Neil, her husband. Many of you have probably already heard about the loss of my lovely wife of 22 years, Lisa. I have so appreciated everyone's prayers, messages, deeds, and kind words these last few weeks. They have kept me propped up, and I will continue to lean upon them.

Everyone at Portland’s Hopewell House hospice was kind, and caring, and loving. The staff treated Lisa like a queen from the moment she arrived. Their focus was always to manage Lisa's pain, and she was resting comfortably at the end. Wednesday morning at 7:00, with a view of snow flakes falling into the garden, and soft piano music playing, I bid farewell to my love. My best friend.

I really appreciate the unwavering support we have received from Lisa's employer, Becker Capital. For 16 years, they have treated us like a part of their family.

There are no immediate plans for a service, but eventually I do want to gather people together for a celebration of Lisa's life.

Between her followers on Live Journal, and friends on Facebook and Twitter, I am truly moved by the number of people Lisa touched.

Many of you have been asking about ways to help. One of Lisa’s wishes is for our son Nate to attend college. To help ensure that dream comes true, a trust fund has been set up to provide for Nathan’s college education. You can donate by sending a check made out to the Nathan Wolfson Trust to:

Becker Capital Management, Inc.
Attn: Sharon Gueck/John Becker
1211 S.W. Fifth Avenue, Suite 2185
Portland, OR 97204

Donors will be sent acknowledgement letters.

Should anyone have questions, please contact Sharon Gueck at sgueck@beckercap.com or John Becker at jbecker@beckercap.com.

This blog has had so many readers. I would love it to continue and live on with guest posts from other authors. Look for more information about this in a future post.

Neil, I am holding you and Nate in my thoughts and prayers. I'm glad a trust fund has been set up so people can help you somehow.

I know you have a hole in your heart, as do I. But I keep thinking how lucky the people are who have known and loved her. She makes me want to be a better person. To live the way she lived, full of love and laughter and joy.

Hi Neil,
I read this with a heavy heart. Lisa was so beloved in the writing community and a lovely presence in my life for so many years through her blog. I'm so sorry for your loss. It must have been difficult you to write this post - so thank you so much for doing that and for giving us some sense of closure.

I will continue to be a reader of Lisa's blog in whatever form it takes on.

Dear Neil and Nate,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your wife and mom sounded like such a terrific person. God Bless you during this difficult time. Her great literature will live on as testimony to her spirit and strength of character.

Dear Neil,
We're so very sorry for your loss. Our community has a gaping hole in it today. Lisa's spirit and words will live on forever, thanks to Lisa's strength and talent and kindness.

Her Deb community friends are collecting flowers and notes and a few of us will set up a little memorial at one of the Half Moon Bay beaches, as we know she loved it there so.

If you, your son and family (or any fans/friends) would like to contribute, here is my P.O. Box:

P.O. Box 7837, Menlo Park, CA, 94026

We will take pictures and send them on to you.

Those of us far away feel helpless and this was a way to gather as a community and honor her.

Will spread the word about the account for your son and will of course donate to it. Our community will do what we can to make sure Lisa gets her wish.

Love and deepest condolences,

Lisa did so much for me and other writers. Her blog was entertaining, honest, and heartfelt. The interviews with me and other authors on her blog had the effect of promoting our books and hopefully helping writers who read our advice. When we met at the SCBWI conference in L.A., she went out of her way to tell me I'd inspired her. I was honored and flabbergasted. I don't think anyone's ever told me that before. And she again went out of her way to email me to tell me how much Nate had enjoyed reading my children's series. (Coincidentally, the protagonists were named Nate and Lisa.) Lisa was one of the most generous people I've known and I'm so sorry she is gone.

My greatest condolences.

It's Thursday, a day on which Lisa would often count her blessings in a "Thankful Thursday" post.

I'm thankful I knew her through the Debut2009 group and through some email we exchanged. I'm thankful that the world has a couple of her books. I'm thankful that you describe her farewell as comfortable and peaceful.

Best wishes to you and your son, and thank you for this message.

Neil, Thank you for posting. I am so very sorry for your loss. Nate and you have both been in my thoughts and prayers. Lisa was a lovely human being and her beautiful spirit and true compassion really came through in her work which was a gift to readers. I only met her last year when PLA was in Portland but she made a lasting impression.
