I stop in front of my dad’s bedroom door. The status board says, “Out,” but I peek inside, anyway. Empty. The status board came into existence when I was seven years old, and able to read proficiently. The options are: Out, Awake, Sleeping, Working, and Busy. I learned early that I could interrupt anything except ‘Busy.’
